My Journey with Tikvah
During years of working through my own health issues- adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalances, weight gain, hormonal acne, hypothyroidism, insomnia, to name a few – I created a number of concoctions that are the products that make up Tikvah today. I had always been healthy, or so I thought. I ate plenty of fruits and veggies, mostly organic foods. I never consumed fast food and generally avoided sugar. Yet, it wasn’t enough to counteract other lifestyle choices, like burning the candle at both ends then popping OTC sleeping pills each night and chugging multiple cups of joe in the morning to function.
One weekend my life changed dramatically. My endocrine system finally said “I’m done” and crashed out. I went from feeling healthy, energetic, vibrant – able to do daily strenuous workouts on top of my full time job and active social life – to overnight barely being able to get off the couch, getting winded from walking around the block and generally feeling like I’d never be healthy again. I barely recognized myself and feared I’d never feel like “me” again. On top of that, I was told I had to give up alcohol, sugar, dairy and worst of all, coffee! <shudders>
During that time I clung to the idea that this was all fixable, that I didn’t have to accept this as my new normal. I threw myself into learning everything I could about what was going on with my body and what could help. I spent hundreds of hours researching adrenal fatigue, the endocrine system, detoxification of the body, how to balance hormones, and became firmly convinced that it is possible to energize in a way that’s restorative and replenishing. None of the products on the market really had what I wanted and I found myself cobbling stuff together. So, I created a bunch of concoctions to incorporate into my daily routine. The key for this stuff is consistency – the good stuff builds up in your body over time for maximum support- so I made sure my concoctions were easy to prepare.
I grew stronger every day until one day I finally felt that “I’m back!” feeling, and boy did that feel sweet. I have kept a number of daily healing practices that I believe will help me to age as gracefully as possible, inside and out. Now I have another reason to be healthy. My beautiful baby girl was born a year ago. I conceived her naturally and on the first try at the age of 46 (my husband of 2 weeks and I were rather surprised). After all the hormonal issues I’d experienced for decades, this felt like nothing short of a miracle.
Now I have another reason to stay healthy: I want to be there for as many milestones in my daughter’s life as possible. And I want to be a role model for her – so she can learn that health is a lifelong journey – a marathon, not a sprint. I hope these products will make it easier for you to incorporate healthy choices into each day!
All my best,
Laura Jenkins, Founder
Tikvah (teek VAH) means hope in Hebrew. In English, we typically think of hope as a feeling, a wish, or a longing. Whether we hope we find a good parking spot or hope we win the lottery, there’s not much substance to it. However, the Hebrew word, tikvah, implies an expectation of obtaining what is desired. Strong’s defines it as a cord, expectation, and hope. It comes from the Hebrew root kavah meaning to bind together, collect; to expect: – tarry, wait (for, on, upon). It is also the word for “rope” in Hebrew, a tangible lifeline we can cling to in times of trouble.
We hope these products help you as much as they helped me!
